LIB DEMS DEMAND MORE CHOICE ..................................................

Recent statement to the Observer

"Councillor Sue Palmer sees no purpose in continuing to participate in the twin bin Steering Group's meetings. Cllr. Palmer makes the point that many issues still remain unresolved.

The Liberal Democrat Group believes that residents deserve more choice, more respect and less threatening action with regard to our commonly agreed aim to increase recycling levels. We also believe that a wider range of recyclates should be accepted. We cannot support the manner in which the scheme is currently being enforced, together with the inconsistencies which are only too apparent in areas like Clive Vale.

The Council should recognise that there is a clear desire to recycle by our residents but the adoption of such a heavy handed approach might well endanger that enthusiasm.

The Liberal Democrats will not be seeking further representation on the Steering Group until the above matters are given serious consideration."

Now that the scheme is up and running, concerns have been raised over :

.... •  changing weekly waste collections to fortnightly ones with associated issues.

.....•  the ‘one size fits all' 240-litre wheeled bins being provided to EVERY home, regardless of ........possible storage problems.

.....•  the fluctuating figures relating to the number of homes that are considered to be unsuitable ........to accept the new bins

.....•  the adequacy of town hall services available to deal with residents' queries

.....•  costs relating to the scheme.

It is clear that there are still town-wide problems. We will take immediate action about complaints.

OUR PLEDGES:

We believe that residents deserve more choice and more respect.

We defend your right not to accept any option that puts at risk your health or your safety.

We refuse to support the threatening manner in which the scheme is currently being run.

We continue to oppose the issuing of enforcement notices.

We support the collection of a wider range of recyclates.

Lib Dems will also be pressing for doorstep glass collections and an increase in collection points.

"The average British person throws away half a tonne of rubbish every year. This cannot be sustainable nor economic. Our environmentally conscious members recognise the need to improve and increase recycling in Hastings ."
