LOCAL Liberal Democrats have hit back after Michael Foster, Labour MP for Hastings & Rye, suggested Nick Perry, their new parliamentary campaigner, is 'Old Labour', and that the Lib Dems are a 'protest party'.
Nick, 31, the youngest ever Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner for the Hastings & Rye seat said,
"I agree with Michael Foster that Liberal Democrats will protest when protest is required. We did so against Labour's illegal war in Iraq; we have protested against the unfair Council Tax, and we have protested against the meddling hand of Whitehall in our Health Service.
"But as Michael well knows, we have costed policies that are fairer and greener than the other parties, and policies that will protect traditional British freedoms.
"The fact of the matter is that Labour and the Conservatives think the same way on so many issues. What the Liberal Democrats offer is a real alternative to the Labour-Tory consensus.
"When Michael suggests that I am 'Old Labour', he is not just making himself look ridiculous, he is admitting what the Labour Party has tried to keep quiet for some time: that the Liberal Democrats are now the only party of the Centre Left in British politics.
"He is clearly rattled. And I am interested to see that he is now positioning himself to appeal to conservatives, as he knows that liberals who have voted for him in the past, are not set to do so in the future."
